"Early in December of 2005 I walked into the Peak Fly Shop, in Colorado Springs, Co. to buy my sons Bryan and Darin a gift for Christmas. I asked Brad Tomlinson, the proprietor, if he could recommend a guided trip for trophy class trout. He suggested a day trip with Landon Mayer on the South Platt River. We called Landon and he asked me what we wanted to get out of the trip. We told him that we wanted to learn to be better fly fisherman, have fun and catch a big trout.
"After talking to Landon it was agreed that we would shoot for the last week in March. As luck would have it, the weather and river conditions were not cooperating . Landon called and told me he would monitor the river and call when conditions looked improved. He did just that. Landon took us to a little fished section of the river. As we walked, Landon explained how he read the river and what we should be looking for how to spot fish. He talked about the spawning cycle and the food supply. Landon showed us the proper technique for fighting a big trout. He was even able to help me improve my casting. My son Bryan instantly hooked up with a 20 inch Rainbow. Next Bryan and Darin had a double hook up with fish over 18 inches. Then I got into the act. At the end of the day we had caught and released about 30 very nice rainbow and brown trout . But more importantly we came away better fly fisherman and had a wonderful experience. To put it in my son’s words “we had a epic day!”

"I booked a day with Landon for me and my 9-year-old son Charlie, so we could continue to improve our skills and so we could hopefully get Charlie onto some nice big trout. Landon took us to the Dream Stream section of the Platte, tied on hatch-matched bugs before getting to the river, and within minutes we were sight casting to big rainbows, cutbows, and browns. Landon has a rare gift: he's a world class fisherman, a great teacher, very kind and patient and encouraging to youngsters, and fun to spend the day with. The highlight of the day was Charlie's fight to land a 20", brightly colored 4-5 lb brown trout, a fight that took us down about a quarter mile of stream, around many obstacles, and finally to the net. Last year, Charlie and I would have lost that fish.....but with Landon's tutoring, we landed it and it was Charlie's biggest fish ever.....or like he put it himself...."my biggest fish, SO FAR!" "Albert Einstein once said: I have no special talents, I am only passionately curious. After watching Landon's DVD Landing the Trout of Your Life, I was definitely passionately curious. How did he get that "hog" from behind that log that multiple times I had spent hours trying to get. Let me tell you, if the fish are, there he will find them. My first trip with Landon I caught at least a dozen fish over 20 inches and ended the day with a 30 inch 10 pound plus beautiful Rainbow. She still brings back memory's that become surreal. The following fall he put me on multiple large Browns in the 10 pound range again, definitely "Trophy" fish.
I just finished a trip again with Landon; and, once again, the hunt for big beautiful trout was on. When I first saw the water level, I was a little concerned. Today was a day where I had better bring my "A" game because I new Landon would still find the fish. In less than an hour we landed, the first fish over 5 pounds and continued to land more; some up to up to the 8 pound range. We were still on a mission for that "Trophy" ten pound plus fish though. After searching a long stretch of fish less water, we found her. This is where the epic battle began. I hooked spooked and lost this fish. Through all of this, Landon never gave up. We both shared the intense passion for that fish. When most guides would have stopped for the day, he continued the battle. Next time I will get that Beautiful Bow until then I'll dream about her."

"I had only fly fished once before and had no formal instruction before meeting Landon Mayer. In less than 15 minutes, of talking, demonstration and practice, we went fishing!
Landon first spotted trout in a murky stream that he knew like the back of his hand. Standing right beside me and coaching my every move, he talked me through hooking a big one! Again, with him by my side, I worked the fish for a hundred yards down stream and after a battle that seemed like an hour of adrenalin rush; I landed it, a 10 ¼ # rainbow on 3 ½ # tippet in less than seven minutes!
Taking any trophy requires putting the pieces together; scouting, knowledge of the species, timing and execution. Landon freely put a stranger onto a trophy fish. I feel very fortunate to have met him. If we both live, I will fish with Landon Mayer again! "

In addition, hook some big ones. I had only fly fished for a few months and was not sure if I would miss out a lot due to my lack of skills. Landon proved me very wrong!
Landon explained in a simplified approach everything about reading the water to how to spot the fish, selection of flies, how to rig, approach, etc. This has helped me a lot both in my home waters and in my travelling worldwide.
